Big Rapids – Big Rapids opened the season with a win over McBain as the Lady Cardinals used a stifling defensive effort to carry them to a 50-42 victory. Led by Junior guard Aliza Hengesbach and her 17 points and 9 steals the Cardinals constantly used their defense to turn in to offense.
The game started slowly for both teams as they felt each other out, and possibly the nerves of opening night going on, the scoring started almost two minutes in to the game with McBain registering the first points of the year. The Cardinals were able to tie and open up a lead from there by using active hands in a full court press and a 1-3-1 zone that led to almost 30 steals for Coach Haist’s team.
The Cardinals had as much as a 14 point lead before McBain started to chip away and make a game of it by knocking down a couple open looks from beyond the arc. Big Rapids was able to calm down and get to the free throw line, attacking the paint on offense and ratcheting up the defensive effort.
The Cardinals had three ladies in double figures as Sophomore Grace White and Senior Maddie Tassoni joined Hengesbach with ten points apiece.
Coach Haist and the Cardinals continue the season at home Friday night against Cedar Springs at 7:30 pm.
