Traverse City – Thursday was a day of experience against some tough teams for the Big Rapids Cardinal Boys Tennis Team. They earned a 4th place finish at the 8 team Traverse City St. Francis School Northern Michigan Invitational, which included many teams that Big Rapids will see again in their end of season regional.
Cardinal Senior Austin Draves netted a win in the consolation round finals by defeating his Harbor Springs opponent 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 (tiebreaker.) Tyler Aris defeated his Ludington opponent 7-5, 7-5 and lost to Harbor Springs, and then won in consolation finals 6-1, 6-0 over Glen Lake opponent. At third singles, Luke VanderHill had a bye in the first round, defeated his opponent in the second round 6-0, 6-0 over TC St. Francis JV and lost a tough match to Traverse City St. Francis Varsity in the consolation round finals. Brad Walling rounded out singles play with a first round bye, had a decisive second round win over his Whitehall opponent and a loss in the invitational finals to TC St. Francis Varsity.
The first doubles duo of Gabe Vermeer and Tait Morrisey won their first round 6-2, 7-5 vs Elk Rapids, and in the consolation round finals, ended the day with a loss to a tough Ludington team. The second doubles team of Sean Scsavnicki and Ethan Westerkamp defeated their first round Glen Lake opponent 6-2, 6-4, dropped a tough match to a Ludington duo and then dropped the consolation round finals match to the Whitehall team. At third doubles, Ryan Draves and Zach Good lost their first round match to the TC St. Francis JV duo and were also defeated in their second round match by the TC St. Francis Varsity duo. At fourth doubles, James McMullen and Raymond Kleeves dropped tough competitive matches to Whitehall and Harbor Springs respectively.
The next Big Rapids match will be at home on Thursday, September 4 versus Fremont. Match play begins at 4 p.m.
