The Big Rapids High School varsity volleyball team went 2-2-1 on Saturday at the Sparta Invitational, falling to the host team in the Gold Bracket semifinal.
The Cardinals opened pool play with a two set win over Saranac; 25-15, 25-10. Lauren Maginnis led the Big Rapids service attack with 3 of the team’s 10 aces. Cara Jensen, Hannah Dadles and Jordan Balliet each had two. Dadles had four kills while Jensen and Madeline White had 3 each. Maginnis had 9 assists.
Big Rapids lost to Sparta in the second match of the morning; 16-25, 26-28. Maginnis tallied 3 more service aces. Emily Fisk had four kills and White had 3. Maginnis had eight assists. Jensen had 5 digs.
The Cardinals split with Cedar Springs in the last match of pool play; 25-21, 12-25. Jensen, Fisk, Dadles, and Maginnis all had a pair of service aces. White had five kills while Fisk, Jensen, and Dadles, each added a two. Maginnis had 8 assists. Jensen had five digs while Brooke Day had 3.
In the opening round of bracket play Big Rapids beat Kent City 25-22, 25-18. Dadles had four aces. Jensen, Jordan Balliet, and White all had two. White had 10 kills. Fisk had seven kills. Maginnis had 22 assists. Jensen had six digs.
In the semifinals the Cardinals took Sparta to three sets before losing; 25-12, 17-25, 9-15. Maginnis had three aces. Jensen, Dadles, and White each had two. Fisk had six kills to lead the team while Dadles had 5, White and Jensen had 3. Fisk had 3 blocks. Balliet had two. Jensen had four digs while Jerri Nowak and Mackenzie Potter had two.
Big Rapids is 18-24-2 on the season. They will travel to Holton on Wednesday.
