Fremont – The Big Rapids Boys Basketball team captured their first Regional Championship since 1987 last night as they defeated Sparta 57-49. The Cardinals capitalized on three straight three point baskets in less than a minute and never looked back.
After jumping out to a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Cardinals hit a bit of a cold spell in the second quarter. Even through the cold shooting, Big Rapids continued to get up and down the court in a hurry and really played a factor at the end of the game. The Cardinals found themselves trailing 25-23 at halftime. The third quarter was very back and forth and both teams seemed to find their stride. Dario Williams had a big quarter, scoring 10 of his team high 20 points during that frame. The Cardinals would cling to a 41-40 lead after three quarters.
Both teams played extremely tough defense throughout but in the beginning of the fourth quarter that was evidenced with only three combined points being scored in the first four and half minutes of the quarter. With 3:30 remaining in the game, Sparta had taken a 43-41 lead. That is when the Cardinals would break loose as they hit three consecutive three point shots by Williams, Quinn Tyson and Nick Baldwin. The Cardinals were then able to hit their free-throws down the stretch and pull out a 57-49 victory.
To go along with Williams 20 points was Tyson with 19, Baldwin with 10 and Tyler Pellerito added a tough six points to go along with his great play at the defensive end of the floor. The victory for the Cardinals moves them on to the Quarterfinal round of play where they will face Cadillac next Tuesday at FSU’s Wink Arena at 7:00 p.m.
