Fremont – The Big Rapids Cardinal Boys Basketball team is heading to a place they haven’t been since 1987, a Regional Championship game. The Cardinal Boys led throughout and were able to take control late on their way to a 61-50 victory over the Alma Panthers last night in the regional semi-final game.
The Cardinals jumped out early with leads of 6-2 and 11-4 on the strength of some great team work getting buckets from Williams, Tyson, Pellerito and Daugherty all in that span. Big Rapids would lead 14-10 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter it was more of the same with some added defensive pressure and scoring on fast breaks. The Cardinals were able to grab a 36-22 half time lead.
Early in the third quarter it looked like the Cardinals were going to let the Panthers back in the game as Alma began hitting some shots and Big Rapids had a short spurt of struggling around the rim. Alma cut the lead to 43-37 at the end of the third quarter. The Cardinals were able to nail down the win in the fourth quarter by going to their pressure defense and really making it tough on Alma. Big Rapids outscored the Panthers 18-13 in the final frame to come away with the Regional Semi-Final victory.
Big Rapids was led in scoring by Quinn Tyson’s 19 points and Dario Williams 18 points. Williams also really controlled the game all night long from the point position as he handled Alma’s pressure and was able to get to the hoop when he needed too. Tyler Pellerito was a big force again for the Cardinals as he chipped in six points to go along with a monster 17 rebounds on the night.
The Cardinals now move on to face Sparta in the Regional Championship game on Wednesday night at 7pm back at Fremont High School.
