Big Rapids – The Big Rapids Cardinal Girls Basketball team matched the Boys and claimed the outright CSAA Conference Championship with a 53-31 victory over Newaygo on Wednesday night. It was a night when senior Kendra Enszer scored her 1,000th career point in the process.
It was a slow start for the Cardinals with so much on the line as they got down 6-0 early and were trailing 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. Big Rapids was then able to settle back into their game and really take control through the second and third quarters building a 32-18 lead during that time. The Cardinals were able to get everyone playing time through the game and really put a nice bow on clinching this league championship. It is the first conference championship for the girls team in 11 years.
Enszer led the Cardinals in scoring with 24 points, including the 1,000th of her career, which resulted in a stoppage in play and a quick ceremony to honor Kendra. Taylor Leach added nine points, Liz Nonhof seven and Kasey Woodworth six to help lead the Cardinals to the win.
The win pushes the Cardinals to 19-0 on the season with their regular season finale coming on Friday as they travel to Lakeview. The JV game will start at 5:30 and the Varsity game will follow at 7:00.
