Big Rapids – The Big Rapids Cardinal Football team won a thriller on Friday evening in front of their home crowd to move to 7-1 on the season. It was a game that was back and forth the whole way and came down to the final minute of play to be decided.
Big Rapids jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 12-7 early in the first half on a 15 yard touchdown run by Jon Spicer and a 75 yard touchdown run by Nick Baldwin. Newaygo then took control of the game by scoring three straight touchdowns, two of which came before halftime for a 20-12 halftime lead for the Lions.
After a back and forth, scoreless third quarter, Newaygo added that third touchdown early in the fourth quarter for a 27-12 lead and really put the pressure on the Cardinals. Big Rapids would score less than three minutes later on a Baldwin 5 yard run. Spicer then intercepted a Newaygo pass a minute later and Ty Lattimore would capitalize with a 38 yard touchdown run of his own. After a successful two point conversion, the score would be 27 – 26 Newaygo with 7:25 remaining in the game.
Newaygo then put together a little drive that took much precious time off the clock before the Cardinals were able to stop Newaygo on a fourth down attempt at the Big Rapids 30 yard line. The Cardinals got the ball back with 45 seconds remaining and one time out left. Big Rapids wouldn’t need that time at as on the first play from scrimmage, Lattimore pitched the ball to Baldwin who hit a streaking Eric Boyd in stride for a 71 yard touchdown and a win for the Cardinals.
The win moves Big Rapids to 7-1 and a step closer to hosting a playoff game. The Cardinals are back in action in a huge game on Friday at Lakeview, who will be looking to get into the playoffs, for a 7pm kick off.
