Girls Varsity Tennis · Cardinal Tennis Grows During Season

Big Rapids –

After my first year of coaching and losing 7 varsity players due to graduation, I didn’t know what to expect this year.  I was pleasantly surprised with a group of 21 young ladies who worked hard and enjoyed learning and playing the game of tennis.  Not only did they work hard but they showed excellent sportsmanship on and off the court.  It was even mentioned by an opponent’s mother on facebook(from a friend of a friend of a friend…) how enjoyable it was to compete against the Big Rapids girls.  A coach could not be more proud of her student-athletes!

We were more competitive this year with a second place finish at the Ovid-Elsie Invitational early in the season and then a strong FIRST place finish at the Essexville/Garber Invitational in May.  Our dual matches were about 50/50.  At regionals, our #1 singles, senior – Kolleen Overmyer defeated the #1 seed from Petoskey then had a tough loss against Coopersville in the semi-finals.  It was our only win at a very competitive regional.

With a young team, our girls have room to improve greatly over the next few years and be very competitive at the regional level.  Their potential is limitless.  With the great coaching skills of our assistant, Bob Eastley and volunteer assistant, Larry Langell, I expect great outcomes from our Lady Cardinals!
