Girls Junior Varsity Softball, Girls Varsity Softball · Cardinal Softball Makes Strides in Early Games

Big Rapids – The Big Rapids Varsity Softball team showed signs of improvement already in this young season as they played tough in two losses to Reed City.  The Coyotes hit the ball well on the day in 14-5 and 8-7 victories over the Cardinals.

In game one, the Cardinals dug a quick 6-0 hole and couldn’t get out of it as the Coyotes built an 11-1 lead before Big Rapids battled back.  Cara Jensen took the loss for the Cardinals but struck out four batters and walked six in her seven innings of work.  Big Rapids was led by Alex Folkema with two hits while Taylor Leach added a hit and an RBI.

Game two was much closer throughout as Big Rapids grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first inning and then the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Reed City added four runs and the Cardinals added one to make it 5-3 after five.  The Coyotes added three more in the sixth before Big Rapids battled almost all the way back with four runs in the seventh before the rally ended with the 8-7 final for Reed City.  Folkema again led the Cardinals going two for three in game two.  Kala Totten also chipped in with two hits for the Cardinals.  Jenny Swymele pitched game two for Big Rapids stricking out two batters and walking six in the loss.

Big Rapids is in action again on Tuesday as they travel to Central Montcalm for another league doubleheader with action starting at 4 p.m.
