Sparta – The Big Rapids Cardinal Boys Basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Monday night and although they fought valiantly until the end, they came up short against Sparta in the Regional Semi-Final. The Cards jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the first quarter but that would be the last time they would lead on the evening as Sparta ran off a 13-2 run to end the quarter and they were off and running from there. The Spartans were just a quicker team Monday night and they didn’t miss many shots either, thats a deadly combination.
Big Rapids continued to hang around through the first half as they went into halftime down 25-16 but an 11-0 run to start the third quarter all but ended the game. Sparta’s speed and quickness on defense and then in transition to offense really became the difference throughout the game as they turned Cardinal turnovers into quick points on the other end of the court. The Cardinals got the lead down to 12 with less than a minute to go in the third quarter but couldn’t get any closer as they closed the game with a 64-44 loss.
At the end of the night, although extremely dissappointed, the Cardinals need to hold their heads high and reflect on the great season they had. To win a share of the CSAA Championship and win the schools first District Championship in 25 years are two major accomplishments.
The Cardinals were led in scoring onthe evening by Sophomore Quinn Tyson who had 17 points, Dario Williams and Nick Baldwin each chipped in seven on the evening as well. The Cardinals are saying goodbye to three seniors; Dylan Schuberg, Austin Brinker, and Ray Nouhan, thank you for everything you guys did.
