Big Rapids – The Cardinal Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball teams both earned CSAA Conference victories on Tuesday night over Central Montcalm in front of the home crowd.
The evening started with a dominating opening half as the girls came out firing early. They came out in the press right away and it was evident that Central Montcalm didn’t have an answer for it. Big Rapids jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in route to a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. As the Cards continued to press they forced the Hornets into 24 turnovers as a team and that was a major factor in the 64-45 victory for Big Rapids. The Cardinals were led in scoring by senior guard Cameron Baumunk who had 26 points on the night, Liz Nonhof added 12 points and Kasey Woodworth chipped in 8 as well. Big Rapids also received a great defensive performance from Alex Folkema who was causing a large number of the turnovers.
In the second game of the evening, the Cardinal Boys came our firing early and hung on for a 57-48 victory over the Central Montcalm Hornets as well. Although you never felt as though the game was in jeopardy, Central Montcalm made a late run to tighten the gap and keep the end score from getting out of hand. The Cardinals held leads of 20-6 after one quarter and 40-17 at halftime. Big Rapids was led in scoring by Quinn Tyson who ended with 14 points while Jake Daugherty and Dario Williams each scored 10.
